Chapter Eight

Gilead thought going to see Daniel was a fine idea. Thank goodness Daniel had asked him. Grinning, he wandered through the woods, sniffing here and there, his tail wagging with his good humor.

His mate had guarded their den, had fought for him, had proved that the wolf was there, eager and beautiful. It was only a matter of time until Rian came home.

He trotted on, heading for his friend's den, feeling settled in his bones. Happy.

Daniel was sunning, sucking up the last of the late autumn sun. "Gilead! My friend!"

Gilead barked, dancing a little. He might just get his human skin on and bask a little that way.

Daniel's arms opened, the offer clear and Gilead pounced, knowing Daniel could hold him. Oh, that was fun. Especially when Daniel flung him away. They played together, Daniel's laughter smoky and warm, the friendship like a balm. He ran and jumped, ran and jumped, and Daniel spun, flinging him all around. Before the last sun settled, though, they both lay down as humans, stretching out.

"Mmm. So good to see you. I was surprised to see your mate here again."

"He is very worried about work. He will be back." He was happy to see Daniel as well. He'd not left his den much for years.

"Of course. He seems miserable without you. He growled at someone."

"Did he?" It was unkind to be pleased, but he was. Poor, confused Rian.

"Mmmhmm. He's almost fuzzy. It's adorable." Daniel winked at him.

Laughing, he settled on his back, hands behind his head. "He is the most adorable, the most wonderful, the most perfect mate."

Daniel's chuckle made him grin. "You're smitten."

As if Daniel were not stupid about the demon. The one with the Z. Gilead knew better. "We're like youngsters again, hmm?"

"It's amazing." Daniel's grin was pure wickedness, evil. Gilead loved to see it.

"It is." He wiggled, just enjoying being in his skin.

"Tell me when you're hungry. I have venison steaks." Daniel blew lazy smoke rings. "Maybe I'll go to a yoga class tomorrow. See if he growls at me."

"Venison? Yum." Daniel doing that exercise Rian did? Oh. Too funny.

"Mmmhmm. I'll even let you cook it. And stop laughing at me before I bite you."

"What? Bite me?" Gilead tried to make his grin smaller. It didn't work.

"Mmmhmm. If I did, and your mate saw, he'd get all grumbly."

"So would yours." The big demon could get all grr.

"He would. It might be worth it. He's been busy. Distracted."

Gilead frowned. "Is something wrong?"

"New people. Guests to train. Work to do." Daniel winked. "He's utterly human sometimes."

"Sad." It wasn't, really, but he had to tease Daniel.

Daniel chortled. "I know. I'm neglected. Do I seem neglected?"

"Indubitably." Gilead loved that word.

"That's what I'm telling everyone." He received another lazy, purely wicked smile. "It will, I'm sure, get to the appropriate demon."

"I hope so for your sake, my friend. I am just waiting for mine to get itchy."

"Will you go to him or make him come to you?"

Pondering that, Gilead scratched his belly, listening to it rumble.
